IGSC PhD Forum and Demo Session

This exciting, interactive session is composed of two components held simultaneously in the same session:

1.  PhD Forum:  Graduate students working in the area of sustainable computing and/or computational sustainability are invited to submit a summary of their Ph.D. thesis work to the Ph.D. Forum at IGSC 2019.  Held in conjunction with the regular IGSC conference program, the aim of the Ph.D. Forum is to provide a specialized forum for senior Ph.D. graduate students to present their Ph.D. thesis work and preliminary results in a poster presentation session. The Ph.D. Forum provides a unique opportunity for students to present their Ph.D. work to the conference attendees, meet with their peers and experts in the field, and most importantly, receive feedback on their work. All the submitted Ph.D. Forum abstracts will be reviewed and the accepted abstracts will be published in the IGSC 20189 proceedings and in IEEE Xplore.  Upon approval by NSF, IGSC expects to provide several student travel grants to students studying in U.S. academic or higher eduction institutions for attending the PhD Forum as outlined below.

2. Project Demonstrations (Demos)

Faculty, students, researchers, and industry members are invited to demonstrate projects related to sustainable computing or computing sustainability at IGSC.  Each Demo team will be provided with a presentation table and access to power and other resources required for demonstrating their project.  The Demo session will be conducted along with the PhD Forum and includes a reception event to attract the conference registrants to attend the session.  Demo teams are asked to submit a 2-page summary describing their Demo project (see submission instructions below).

Publication and Submission Instructions

1. For PhD Forum:

Accepted abstracts in the Ph.D. Forum will be published (maximum 2 pages in length for each paper) in the IGSC Ph.D. Forum Proceedings, which will be published in IEEE Xplore as part of the IGSC proceedings.

Each submission must include:

  • A two-page summary (extended abstract) of the Ph.D. work based on IEEE conference template. Please check the Paper Submission instructions on the IGSC webpage (https://www.igscc.org/paper-submission) for formatting templates. The two-page paper should clearly list the main contributions of the student Ph.D. thesis. Also, it should include a list of recent publications, if any, in the reference section;

  • The author list in this extended abstract should only include the student name (first author) and the advisor. Also, please specify to which track the submission belongs. Information on different tracks is available on the IGSC webpage (https://www.igscc.org/call-for-papers);

  • A recently published paper (conference publication or journal) by the student in the field, if any; and

  • A letter from the advisor, sanctioning the submission and acknowledging willingness to support the Ph.D. students’ travel (either fully or as necessary beyond any possible IGSC student travel support) to the conference to present their posters at the Forum.

All the aforementioned requirements should be merged into a single PDF file and submitted at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=igscc2019 (From Topics, make sure to select “Ph.D. Forum” for Ph.D. Forum submissions).

Conference Attendance and Poster/Demo Presentation

The PhD Forum participants are expected to register for the conference at the student rate with the expectation of presenting their posters during the Ph.D. Forum poster session at IGSC. Please note the following regarding your poster presentations:

  • You will have a display area sized at maximum 48 inches by 36 inches. You are free to use this area in any way you like (e.g., one large poster, multiple sheets, etc). If you choose to use multiple sheets instead of one poster, you can produce a total of six (6) A4 pages or print a total of twelve (12) PowerPoint presentation slides (2 slides per A4 page).

  • We will provide thumbtacks (pushpins)/tape to hang your poster on provided boards. Please look for the board with your presentation number.

  • IGSC will not supply output or production services.

2. For Project Demonstration (Demos):

Accepted Demo Projects summaries will be published (maximum 2 pages in length for each summary) in the IGSC Demos Proceedings, which will be published in IEEE Xplore as part of the IGSC proceedings.

Each submission must include:

  • A two-page Demo Project summary (extended abstract) describing the project and the planned demonstration event at IGSC, based on IEEE conference template. Please check the Paper Submission instructions on the IGSC webpage (https://www.igscc.org/paper-submission) for formatting templates. The two-page paper should clearly list the main contributions of the demo project. Also, it should include a list of recent publications, if any, in the reference section;

  • A recently published paper (conference publication or journal) related to the demonstration, if any; and

  • A detailed list of required resources (power, connectivity, etc) to set up, man, and demo the project at the conference.

All the aforementioned requirements should be merged into a single PDF file and submitted at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=igscc2019 (From Topics, make sure to select “Demo” for demo papers).

Conference Attendance and Poster/Demo Presentation

The Demo Project teams are expected to register for the conference with the expectation of manning their Demo table and presenting their project during the Ph.D. Forum/Demo session at IGSC.

PhD Forum Student Travel Support

With support from National Science Foundation (NSF), IGSC is expecting to provide 8-10 student travel grants (each at $1,000 or actual travel/registration costs, whichever is less) for attending IGSC and the PhD Forum.  All PhD Forum submissions are automatically evaluated for student travel support with no need for submission of additional materials in this regard.  NOTE: NSF travel support is ONLY available to students studying in U.S. academic or higher education institutions.
